Effect of Guild Experience:

  • Guild experience is increased in the normal way, killing/questing.
  • Effects of extra guild experience.

Benefits:

  • Great guild for making money in General, the higher than average trading skill pays off on all the things you sell.
  • Can make rather good quality armours.
  •
  • Can make decent weapons.
  • Can sharpen edged weapons anywhere in the realms with a whetstone.
  • Their appraisal skills are very useful for someone looking to gather information on weapons and armours.  They get extra information to help compare and contrast between items.
Armours give one line relating to the overall quality.
Weapons give two lines, one how easy it is to use the other how much damage a successful blow would do.
Smiths can usually recognize a magic item as being enchanted.
    For example.

&gt;sminspect shield
You study the armour carefully.
This is what you notice:
Thick demonhide has been stretched over the face of already very sturdy wood,
adding even more protection to the wielder of this device.
It looks like it is in prime condition.

You appraise that the weight is 3300 grams and you guess its volume is about
740 milliliters. You estimate its worth to 270 cc. It could reject being sold
by keep protecting it.
The demonhide shield is made to be worn on the arm of choice.
<strong><span style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;" _mce_style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;">This armour could perhaps reduce damage a little.</span></strong>

&gt; sminspect quarterstaff
You study the weapon carefully.
This is what you notice:
This is a thin, smooth quarterstaff made of iron. The pole has been polished
smooth yet feels durable when held by a skilled master. The weapon looks like
it could do considerable damage when wielded properly with both hands.
It looks like it is in prime condition.

You appraise that the weight is 3900 grams and you guess its volume is about
390 milliliters. You estimate its worth to 1200 cc. It could reject being sold
by keep protecting it.
The polearm is made to be wielded in both hands.
<span style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;" _mce_style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;">This weapon could most likely kill with a single swipe.</span>
<strong><span style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;" _mce_style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;">You should have no trouble handling this weapon--or making a cruel hit with it</span></strong>
<strong><span style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;" _mce_style="font-size: 85%; color: #00ff00;">for that matter.</span></strong>

Limitations:

  • Raw materials are required to create items in the forge, such as iron bars, leathers and wooden poles.  These however can be bought in the Bree area forge complex, or produced from other items gathered in the realms.
  • Skills are not free, have to pay to train as per most guilds.
  • Cannot make magic weapons or armours, so will never be able to craft the best weapon, shield, boots etc.
  • To forge items as fast as possible Smiths need to keep the forge hot by pumping the bellows at regular intervals, a cold forge takes over twice as long to make the item.
  • Pumping the bellows may be overly tiring for those will low constitution.
  • The guild has a who list but it is anonymous.
  • The game keeps a counter of the number of times you forge a particular item, but there is no way to display it so you need to keep a rough count yourself if you are interested in such things.

  • The amount of cash you can make by selling items in a shop appears to be capped for each shop.  Once your item reaches that cap you will not get more total copper coins in value for it, but you will get more gold coins vs silver and copper out of the sale as the items quality improves but the end value is the same.
  • Not every shop seems to give the same coins, some appear to pay more gold vs silver, there have even been some that pay platinum's but this seems to have been changed.
  • The CAP a shop pays per item also does NOT seem to be consistent from shop to shop, some people also believe selling items individually vs a batch of X at one time gives more overall money.

  • The weapons and armours offered to everyone in the game by the npc smiths like Bubba Hammerhead in Gelan are close to the same quality as an experienced smiths.  In other words if you only want to join the guild as way to get a starting set of gear there are other ways to do the same thing.

Additional Information:

  • You can forge the fastest items in around 1 minute an item, there is not a great deal of variance in time per item type, there is much more variance between forging with a hot or cold forge.
  • You need to repeatedly forge a particular item to get better at producing it, ie repeated practice = better quality item which is worth more.
  • Its is a rule of thumb that you should try to forge around 3000 of an item to consider it as approaching the best you will be able to make.
  • You can track progress in an item by indirect means:  Such as how much total copper coins they are selling for (up to the shops cap) as well as how it appraises when you inspect it (some degree of error here because skill is not at superior guru level).  Remember the currency is base 12 ie 1 platinum = 12 gold = 144 silver = 1728 copper coin, co convert everything to copper coin to compare total amounts of cash.
  • If you want to make sure you use the best item out of a batch try valuing each of them at a shop and use the highest value one.
  • Not all items that you produce have the same value, the raw material cost also plays a part, try experimenting to see which is best for making money.

Note:

  • This is the sign from one of the forges in Bree.
  • In the other forges scattered through the lands some of the signs are different.  But the items from the Bree sign can be crafted in ANY forge, ie All forges are equal.
  • The smiths help files contain more information about items & the materials required to make each one. But this is also easily discoverable through trial and error.
